Bond Election

Three town hall meetings are scheduled so that citizens can become informed voters about the bond election propositions that council voted to place on the May 6 ballot. The town halls will be held at Key Elementary beginning at 7pm on Thursday, March 30; Wednesday, April 12 (note this date changed from April 6) and Thursday, May 4. The 3/2/17 special council meeting packet includes pages that are a preliminary, for discussion purposes at that meeting, set of slides about the two proposals on the bond election. While I expect some changes may be made based on council direction at that meeting I believe they are worth looking over to help you get your questions ready for the town halls. It is important for everyone to educate themselves in order to make an informed vote on the bond proposals.

With regards to the bond election, I am not going to armchair quarterback the decision made by the sitting council to hold a bond election for the two proposals in the amounts specified because I do not have all of the information at my disposal that they had. I intend to learn more about the proposals by attending meetings presented by the city to educate its citizens.

There are pros and cons to issuing these bonds as well as other options that have the ability to begin to move the city forward in addressing its infrastructure needs. As I walk the city in the coming weeks and hold gatherings to introduce myself to you, I am happy to discuss these pros and cons but I will not tell you how you should vote on this important issue. What I can tell you is that I tend towards being fiscally conservative and pay as you go. However, there are times when incurring debt is the proper way to address needs.

Council has voted to ask DWG citizens to let them know if bonds, up to a specific amount, for specific improvements is the way they want the city to move forward to address infrastructure needs such as road, water and city hall upgrades. If elected, I will carry out the decisions made in the bond election in a fiscally responsible way.
